The Coffs Harbour Musical Comedy Company is one of the longest-running
arts associations in the region, having originally been founded in 1978.
The original 15 founding members came from all walks of life, united by
a love of musical theatre.
In 1978 Coffs Harbour High School
Music Teacher Le-An Wilson, and Wendy Smith, collaborated on the High
School Production of Calamity Jane - then went on to form the Coffs
Harbour Musical Comedy Company.
Our first production was OKLAHOMA performed
at the Jetty Theatre for one week, then St. Augustine Hall for the
second week, as the theatre was used at that time to screen movies. The second production was SOUTH PACIFIC at the newly completed Coffs Harbour High School Auditorium - an enormous cast that would not fit on the Jetty Theatre stage.
When
the lease on the Jetty Theatre for movies expired, and the
theatre was considered for development by the Town Council, moves were
made by a small group of interested people to have the Jetty Theatre
Heritage listed and retained for live performances by a management
committee.
The Jetty Memorial theatre is now a wonderfully
restored and maintained vintage playhouse, which hosts a wide variety of
productions from both touring professional and other local theatre
groups, and enjoys strong support from the community in Coffs Harbour.
We
now formally hire the theatre for the duration of our shows, and we
hope to be able to continue this long-lasting and mutually beneficial
association.
Since those early days, the company has grown
considerably and now has over 150 talented members from all walks of
life. The aim of the company is to fund varied productions which will
showcase the abundance of talent, both young and old, within the Coffs
Harbour region.
The company encourages anyone interested in
theatre to join and participate. Auditions are always well-advertised
and open to all, and besides on-stage roles, there are also many behind
the scenes jobs such as set-building, costuming, backstage, front of
house, lighting and sound, and directing, all of which are vitally
important to the production of any stage show, and without which the
show simply couldn't go on.
CHMCC is now a registered charity able to accept tax deductible donations with a strong commitment to fostering the stage performance arts and providing top-quality entertainment for the local community at a
reasonable price - the popularity of our productions is a true testament to our success!

Since joining CHMCC in 2016, I’ve been deeply involved in its community. I’ve served as treasurer for the past year using my Cert IV in Business Administration, which includes bookkeeping and expertise in MYOB and Xero accounting software packages. My CHMCC experience spans numerous shows, from performing on stage, to working behind the scenes and cementing my passion for teamwork and building community spirit.
Tom Madden
I’ve been a proud member of the CHMCC committee since 2022. On stage, I’ve had the pleasure of playing roles such as The Baker in Into The Woods (2021), Dewey Finn in School of Rock (2023), and Galileo in We Will Rock You (2024). I was also the Assistant Music Director and played in the band for Atomic (2023). I enjoy lending a hand backstage and behind the scenes whenever I can.
Fiona Shaw
I’ve been involved in the Coffs Harbour theatre scene since 2020, and it’s become a deeply rewarding part of my life. My passion lies in directing, stage management, and creating welcoming environments for audiences. I co-directed School of Rock in 2023 and will direct Legally Blonde: The Musical in November 2025. I have also helped to establish Auslan interpretation for CHMCC productions, making local musical theatre more accessible. Theatre is about connection, whether behind the scenes or in front of the audience, and I’m grateful to be part of such a vibrant community.
Deanna (Dee) Tune
Dee has been involved in Community Theatre for over 30 years. She first appeared to Coffs audiences as Mrs Anna in CHMCC’s 2011 production of The King and I. Tom Fry
I love the feeling of escaping from the real world that theatre brings. I've spent years feeding my passion through various productions and roles, many through CHMCC with experience in acting, singing, stage, technical and crew work. From Shakespearean dramas to contemporary musicals, I've had the privilege of bringing characters to life and collaborating with talented individuals. My passion for storytelling through theatre drives me to continue exploring new roles, techniques, and creative opportunities. Im honoured to be part of the CHMCC committee and I'm excited to take on new challenges and share my love for theatre with the community.
Courtney Bannon
I have been part of the CHMCC family for 18 years. I trained at the Actors College of Theatre and Television in Sydney and received my Certificate IV in Musical Theatre. I performed in a lot of shows with the CHMCC and other companies. Including Katie Brown in Calamity Jane, Velma in Chicago, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Glinda in Wicked and Princess Fiona in Shrek. I love being able to bring my knowledge of theatre to the committee and company whether that’s on stage, production, backstage, front of house etc and help make CHMCC a happy, safe and creative place.
